This cocktail is similar to an Amaretto Sour, has gained popularity among modern restaurants and bars in Lisbon. It’s now even commercialized by Amarguinha’s brand itself. It’s simply delicious, very refreshing, and has the perfect balance between sweet and sour. Amarguinha – Portuguese Bitter Almond Liqueur
Amarguinha is the brand of the original Portuguese bitter almond liqueur from the Algarve, and also how the drink it’s known generically. Although there are several other brands in the market that also commercialize it. The name Amarguinha is the diminutive of the word amarga, meaning bitter from the bitter almonds. Contradictorily, it is a very sweet liqueur with a strong almond flavour. It’s appreciated at the end of a meal as a digestif, served with ice and sometimes with a squeeze of lemon too to cut through the sweetness.
What You Will Need to Make Amarguinha Sour
To make the perfect Amarguinha Sour you only need a few ingredients: Amarguinha, lemons, aromatic bitters (e.g Angostura Bitters), pasteurized egg whites, and ice. If you are feeling fancy, you can garnish with Maraschino cherries too! As for the equipment, you will need your usual cocktail gear, a shaker, a bar jigger, and old-fashioned glasses.
